FITA delays decision on Eva imports
Recently, the Federation of Truckers Associations of Philippines decided to postpone the implementation of its earlier decision to stop accepting imports from Evergreen Marine, The decision was due to take effect on December 16. This decision was made in light of the current discussions and considerations on the logistical and operational challenges facing the cargo shipping industry.
On Dec. 11, the federation expressed concern about Evergreen's process of recycling empty containers, calling it "exceptionally difficult and delayed." This situation poses significant problems for truck drivers and logistics providers, who rely on timely and efficient operations to manage their supply chains. The group stressed that delays in returning empty containers would not only disrupt their plans, but also lead to increased operating costs and inefficiencies.
The decision to postpone the suspension of imports from Evergreen reflects the alliance's commitment to finding a balanced solution that addresses the concerns of its members while taking into account the broader impact on trade and commerce in the Philippines. By postponing the implementation of this decision, the alliance aims to engage in further dialogue with Evergreen to seek improvements to its container return process.
When asked about the solution, Zapata said they advised the Bank of China to shorten the stay time of empty foreign containers in the country to 45 days from the current 90 days to force shipping companies to evacuate empty containers and unclog empty container storage yards. According to the Bank of China Customs Administrative Order No. 01-2015, the time limit for the re-export of empty containers is 90 days after returning to the shipping company, otherwise duties and taxes will be paid per box.
the Federation’s decision to postpone the suspension of Evergreen’s imports highlights the complexity of the shipping industry and the importance of collaboration in overcoming logistical challenges.
